This Honey Soy Chicken bowl comes together in just 15 minutes with basic ingredients. The sauce combines sweet, salty, and savory flavors, while the diced chicken breast is moist on the inside and crispy on the outside.
Asian take-out dishes are tasty, but preparing them at home is even more satisfying and healthier (not to mention cheaper too). You gonna love this yaki udon stir fry, spicy potatoes (gamja jorim), and popular honey garlic chicken.

🛒Ingredients
- Rice - feel free to switch out the traditional white rice for your preferred variety. We're also fans of cauliflower rice or turmeric rice!
- Chicken - while chicken thighs remain juicy and tender, marinated chicken breast is also an excellent choice.
- Maple syrup or honey - you can use any of these!
- Soy sauce - go for the low-sodium version to avoid making the dish too salty.
- Garlic - the small amount provided adds a pleasant garlicky aroma and flavor per serving. If you prefer a stronger garlic taste, feel free to double the amount.
Step-by-step photos can be seen below the recipe card.
📋Tips
- If you are in a rush, skip the marinating step and your chicken bowls are ready in 15 minutes! However, marinating chicken will add more flavor and tenderize the chicken making it extra juicy.
- Make a double batch of the sauce, and heat it in skillet over low heat to drizzle the bowls once serving.
- Veggies - experiment with different colorful vegetables or add whatever you have leftover in the fridge. Everything goes! You can use raw, roasted, steamed, or sautéed veggies.
- These honey soy chicken bowls are not spicy, but feel free to add some heat with red pepper flakes or some Sriracha.
Storage Instructions
- 🍱To Store. Refrigerate leftover chicken slices in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days. I often use leftover chicken for street tacos the next day. Keep the veggies and rice separately for easy reheating later.
- 🥶Freezing. Easily double or triple the recipe and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- 🔥To Reheat. Warm the chicken in a skillet on the stovetop over medium-low heat or in the microwave. You might need to prepare some extra sauce and coat the chicken again before reheating. Refer to a guide on how to reheat rice using four different methods.
- Meal prep. Whisk the sauce together and store it sealed in a mason jar for up to a week in the fridge. For even more flavor, marinate the chicken overnight. Keep the veggies separately in food containers.

🤷Frequently Asked Questions
I like to broil these - it is quick and gives a nice char to the chicken just like when grilling! Baking on the other hand, allows for flavor infusion and works well with saucy type of dishes and of course cheese.
Yes, especially if you are using skin on chicken thighs. By the end of broiling the chicken will have a nice char and slightly crisp on the exterior.
Chicken is versatile and can be roasted, fried, or steamed for delicious results. Chicken thighs, in particular, shine when roasted or fried, as it allows the fat to render and results in a succulent texture.

I’m confused. The recipe says one serving but calls for 5-6 oz chicken thighs? And the marinade doesn’t look like enough to cover that much chicken. Is it supposed to be one 5-6 oz thigh?
Rita
Hi Susan, the recipe says 5-6 ounces of chicken thighs. It means in total you use 5-6 ounces of chicken meat.
Harold
