🛒Ingredients
- Tart apples- make sure you use firm, crisp apples. I love using Granny Smith or Cortland apples. Be sure to core and peel them, before dicing.
- All purpose flour - you can sift the flour if you would like to make sure there are no lumps, but it’s not a requirement for this simple bread recipe.
- Oat flour - this adds a nice texture to the bread.
- Baking soda - adding baking soda helps the bread become light and fluffy as it’s baked.
- Unsweetened applesauce - since you’ll be adding sugar, using unsweetened applesauce gives the bread a nice apple flavoring without being overly sweet.
- Canola oil - you can also use coconut oil or olive oil.
- Milk - any type of milk will work for this recipe. I prefer to use skim milk.
- Granulated sugar - added for sweetness.
- Eggs - for even mixing, use room temperature eggs. If forgotten, place cold eggs in a bowl and cover with warm tap water for 5 minutes.
- Pure vanilla extract - for flavor and warmth.
- Ground cinnamon - an optional topping along with brown sugar creates the perfect addition to this fresh apple bread.

🥣How To Make Apple Bread
Preheat. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Add non-stick spray to an 8 x 4-inch loaf pan.
Mix. Add the whole wheat flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt to a bowl. Whisk.
Whisk. Use a different bowl and whisk the oil, applesauce, milk, egg, sugar, and vanilla.
Make a well. Create a well in the middle of the dry ingredients, and pour in the wet ingredients.
Stir by hand to combine (this will be thick and lumpy).
Add the apples. Fold in the prepared apples using a rubber spatula.
Transfer. Put the bread batter into the loaf pan.
Pat the top flat with the spatula to level it out.
Make the topping. Add the cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl and sprinkle on top of the bread batter.
Bake. Put the loaf pan in the oven and bake for 25 minutes.
Cover loosely with foil, and bake for an additional 20 minutes.
Cool. Place the bread pan on a wire rack and let the bread cool for 10 minutes.
Turn the loaf onto the wire rack to finish cooling.
📋Tips For Making The Best Apple Cinnamon Bread
- For accurate flour measurement, use a scale. If unavailable, fluff flour with a spoon, then spoon it into cups and level with a knife to avoid dense loaves.
- Don't overmix the batter; it can toughen the apple bread. Skip the mixer and use a spatula instead.
- Line the loaf pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Avoid swapping for ceramic or glass pans, as they conduct heat differently.
- Allow the apple bread to cool in the pan to set up properly and avoid crumbling when slicing.
To check that the bread is done baking, insert a clean toothpick into the center of the baked bread. If the toothpick comes out clean, the bread is done baking and ready to cool.
Storage Instructions
- 🍱To Store. To keep the bread as fresh as possible, let it cool to room temperature before storing it in an airtight container or bread box.
- 🥶Freezing. Baked bread is great for freezing for later! Wrap the bread in aluminum foil or plastic wrap, and then store it in a freezer-safe bag.
- To Make Ahead. If you prep and bake the bread ahead of time, keep it sealed tightly to retain the moisture.

🤷Frequently Asked Questions
I’m all about using Granny Smith apples for cake and bread recipes. Not only does the tart flavor pair perfectly with the other added ingredients, but the texture of the apples holds well during the baking process, making them not a mushy addition but a firm and flavorful one.
The bread freezes well, so save one loaf for later. Let it cool, wrap it in plastic, and store it in a freezer-safe bag for up to 6 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before enjoying.
