These Honey Hot Chicken Tenders are crispy, spicy, and sweet all at once. Panko-crusted chicken comes out of the air fryer perfectly crunchy, then gets drizzled with a hot honey sauce that ties the whole thing together.

They're ready in under 30 minutes and taste a lot more impressive than the effort they take.

Why This Is On Repeat At My House

This is the recipe I make when I want something that feels a little indulgent but still comes together fast. The air fryer keeps the breading crispy without deep frying, and the hot honey sauce is what people always ask about.

I usually make extra sauce because it never lasts long. It's just as good drizzled over the tenders as it is served on the side for dipping.

One thing I've learned: don't skip pressing the panko onto the chicken. Pressing it on firmly is what keeps the coating from flaking off in the air fryer basket.

🛒 Ingredients

  • Chicken Breasts - Cut into tenders. Try to keep them a similar size so they cook evenly.
  • Panko Breadcrumbs - Gives the coating its crunch. Regular breadcrumbs will work, but panko crisps up better in the air fryer.
  • Hot Sauce - Used in both the coating and the sauce. Use your favorite brand and adjust to taste.
  • Honey - The base of the sauce. Warming it with the spices mellows the heat just enough.
  • Cayenne & Chili Powder - Bring the heat to the honey sauce. Start light if you're not sure how spicy you want it.
  • Seasonings - Garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika season the coating without overpowering the sauce.

👩‍🍳 You'll find the complete list of ingredients below the recipe card.

🥘 How To Make Honey Hot Chicken Tenders Step By Step

For the hot honey sauce:

  1. Combine the honey, hot sauce, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, chili powder, and salt in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Warm for about 5 minutes, then remove from heat and let it steep while you make the chicken.

For the chicken tenders:

  1. Mix the dry coating: Combine the panko, flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and ½ teaspoon of black pepper in a wide bowl. Stir well.
  2. Mix the wet coating: In a second wide bowl, whisk together the beaten eggs, milk, hot sauce, and the remaining salt and pepper.
  3. Bread the chicken: Dip each tender into the egg mixture, then into the panko mixture, pressing the panko onto the outside so it sticks. Set the coated tenders on a baking sheet, then spray with olive oil spray.
  4. Preheat: Preheat the air fryer to 390°F.
  5. Air fry: Place the tenders in the air fryer in a single layer, leaving space between them. Cook for 8-9 minutes, flipping halfway through. They're done when the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
  6. Serve: Drizzle the hot honey sauce over the tenders and serve.

📋 Important Tips Before You Start

  • Crunch Tip: Press the panko onto the chicken firmly so it doesn't shake loose in the basket.
  • Don't Crowd the Basket: Leave space between the tenders so air can circulate and they crisp on all sides.
  • Spice Level: Taste the sauce before drizzling. Add more hot sauce if you want more heat, or more honey to mellow it out.
  • Common Mistake: Drizzling the sauce on too early makes the coating soggy. Add it right before serving.

Easy Swaps

  • Use boneless chicken thighs instead of breasts for a juicier bite.
  • Swap panko for crushed cornflakes for an even crunchier coating.
  • Leave out the cayenne and chili powder for a kid-friendly honey version.
  • Bake at 425°F for about 18-20 minutes if you don't have an air fryer.

What To Serve With Honey Hot Chicken Tenders

These are great on their own, or paired with a cooling side to balance the heat.

🍱 Storage Instructions

  • 🍱To Store. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • 🥶To Freeze. Freeze the breaded, un-sauced tenders after cooking for up to 2 months. Thaw before reheating.
  • 🔥To Reheat. Reheat in the air fryer at 375°F for 4-5 minutes to keep the coating crispy. Add fresh sauce after reheating rather than before.

❓FAQs

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes. Bread the tenders and refrigerate them uncooked for a few hours before air frying. Make the sauce ahead too and just reheat it gently before serving.

How spicy is the hot honey sauce?

It's mild to medium as written, mostly sweet with a gentle heat. Add more hot sauce or cayenne if you want it spicier.

Can I bake these instead of using an air fryer?

Yes. Bake at 425°F on a wire rack for about 18-20 minutes, flipping halfway through, until cooked through and golden.
