🛒Ingredients

  • Sweet potatoes - You can find common orange sweet potato varieties like Beauregard and Jewel at most stores. These can be peeled or unpeeled and cut into ¾-inch cubes. For crispy potatoes, keep the skins on.
  • Oil - Olive oil, avocado oil, sesame oil, or coconut oil.
  • Seasoning - I’ve used ground cumin, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt. Italian seasoning or dried herbs can also be added to this mixture, such as dried oregano, basil, thyme, and rosemary.

Sweet potatoes are highly nutritious, offering a wealth of benefits as an excellent source of fiber, beta carotene, magnesium, potassium, vitamin C, B6, and more.

🥣Instructions

Wash and scrub the potatoes and cut them into small cubes.

How To Choose A Good Sweet Potato

  • Select red or orange-skinned sweet potatoes for sweeter, creamier potatoes that are less starchy.
  • Don’t mistakenly choose yams instead of sweet potatoes (although many grocery stores in the USA label sweet potatoes as yams). Yams have a higher starch content and are dryer.
  • Choose sweet potatoes with smooth and spotless skin. The potatoes should be firm without discoloration.

📋Tips

  • Wash the sweet potatoes well before cutting them, especially if you decide to keep the skin on. Dry the washed sweet potatoes thoroughly, which will help create a deliciously crispy texture.
  • Try to cut the potatoes into uniform-sized small cubes for even cooking in the oven.
  • You can flip the potatoes with a spatula halfway through the cooking time to ensure an even crisp on all sides. This is an optional step.
  • Use a baking pan with very low or no elevated sides for the best air circulation.
  • Don't use aluminum foil to line the baking sheet - the roasted sweet potato cubes tend to stick to it. Instead, line the baking pan with parchment paper.
  • Ensure your oven is thoroughly preheated before placing your pan inside. The high oven temperature is essential for achieving a delightful crispiness on the exterior of your sweet potatoes.
  • Properly space out the sweet potato cubes on your baking sheet. If they are too close together, the hot air won't circulate evenly around them, potentially leading to uneven crispiness.
  • Make it extra crispy. Consider adding cornstarch to your sweet potato preparation. Through its moisture-absorbing properties, cornstarch can enhance the overall crispiness of your dish. You only need a small amount, enough to coat the potatoes.
  • For a customized flavor profile, you have the option to incorporate your preferred seasonings. Popular choices include cumin, garlic powder, chili powder, paprika, or a touch of cayenne for a bit of heat.
  • Make it sweet. While sweet potatoes naturally have a sweet flavor, you can also introduce a hint of sweetness by adding a small amount of cinnamon, brown sugar or maple syrup to suit your taste preferences.

Storage Instructions

  • 🍱To Store. Store the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.
  • 🥶Freezing. I don't recommend freezing the leftovers as the potatoes will lose their texture after thawing. It is best to freeze raw potato cubes.
  • 🔥To Reheat. Reheat in the oven or air fryer, no need to add more oil.

Variations and Ideas

  • Create a sweeter flavor by tossing the cubed sweet potatoes in cinnamon and maple syrup before baking.
  • Add curry powders, ginger, and turmeric as the seasoning base.
  • Smoked paprika and chili powder will add a lovely kick of heat to these sweet potatoes.
  • Leave the sweet potato skin on these cubed sweet potatoes for added crispiness.
  • Toss the cubed and seasoned sweet potatoes in a little arrowroot starch or cornstarch for excess starch crispier potatoes with extra texture.
  • Use yellow potatoes or regular potatoes instead of sweet potatoes.
  • Sprinkle freshly grated parmesan cheese over the sweet potato cubes before baking.
