  • 2 cups yellow onions
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • teaspoon coarse kosher salt
  • teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 Hawaiian rolls, or slider buns, cut halfway
  • 12 slices provolone cheese
  • 1 pound deli roast beef
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 3 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons spicy brown mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon poppy seeds
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 9x13 baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a pan, cook onions with oil, 1 tablespoon butter, salt, and black pepper until soft and slightly caramelized. Set aside.

  • Place bottom rolls on baking sheet. Layer 6 cheese slices, roast beef, caramelized onions, then another 6 cheese slices.

  • Add top rolls.

  • Mix 3 tablespoon melted butter, maple syrup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and garlic powder. Brush mixture on top.

  • Cover with foil and bake 15-20 minutes until heated through and cheese melts. Top with poppy seeds before serving. Garnish with parsley before serving.

Notes

  • To Store. You can keep the leftovers in the fridge for up to 5 days. It's great to make and heat up if you need a quick lunch or snack.
  • Freezing. You can freeze the sandwiches baked or unbaked for up to 3 months.
  • To Make Ahead. Caramelized onions can be made 1-2 days in advance and refrigerated. For sandwiches, wrap them tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate until ready to bake. Just remember, that the buns may become soggy. When you're ready to bake proceed with baking instructions.
