Creamy, thick honey mustard sauce that comes together in minutes and tastes way better than anything from a bottle.
It’s smooth, tangy, slightly sweet, and incredibly versatile. Once you make it once, you’ll want it on everything from chicken to sandwiches and fries.

Why we love this
- Easy and fast - this sauce takes just a few minutes. Add everything to a jar or bowl, whisk or shake, and it’s ready.
- Balanced flavors - tangy mustard, a touch of vinegar, and sweet honey work together without overpowering each other. No single flavor steals the show.
- So many uses - perfect with fried foods like Crispy Chicken Burgers or Salmon Patties, and just as good spread on Roast Beef Sandwiches or wraps.
Ingredients

- Mustard - Dijon gives the sauce more tang and depth than yellow mustard. If you’re unsure, use what you have or mix them 50/50.
- Spices - A small amount of cayenne adds warmth without heat. Start with the listed amount and adjust after tasting.
- Honey - Sweetness is personal. Start with less, whisk well, then add more if needed. The flavor balances out once the sauce is paired with food.
- Mayonnaise - Low-fat or regular, both work. I usually use vegan mayonnaise. It’s creamy, smooth, and works perfectly here.
- Vinegar - Use a mild vinegar like apple cider. Too much vinegar can make the sauce taste more like dressing than a dip.
- Lemon - Fresh lemon brightens the sauce. Lime or orange juice also work if that’s what you have.
- Black pepper - Don’t be shy. It helps round out the sweetness.

Always adjust honey slowly. It’s easier to add sweetness than fix an overly sweet sauce.
Tips
- This sauce tastes even better the next day once the flavors settle.
- Use it on chicken, pork, turkey, hot dogs, chili cheese dogs or even spoon a little over plain rice. It’s especially good on crispy chicken sandwiches.
- For heat, add a few drops of Frank's red hot sauce and taste as you go.
- Fresh herbs like parsley, cilantro, or chives add a nice pop. Dried herbs work too.
- For a thicker dipping sauce, add a little more mayo. Sour cream also works if you want extra richness.

❌ Don’t Make These Oatmeal Mistakes
- Adding all the honey at once - Start with less and taste as you go. You can always add more, but it’s hard to fix a sauce that’s too sweet.
- Skipping the resting time - The sauce tastes good right away, but letting it chill for 15 to 30 minutes helps the flavors blend and mellow.
- Using too much vinegar - A little goes a long way. Too much can make the sauce taste more like dressing than a creamy dip.
- Judging the flavor before pairing it with food - On its own, the sauce can taste strong. Once it’s on chicken, sandwiches, or fries, everything balances out.
- Overmixing herbs or spices - Add extras slowly. You want to enhance the sauce, not overpower the honey mustard flavor.
🍱 Storage Instructions
- 🍱To Store. Store the honey mustard sauce in an airtight container or jar in the refrigerator. It keeps well for up to 1 week. Stir or shake before using.
- 🥶Freezing. Freezing is not recommended. The mayonnaise can separate once thawed, which affects the texture.
- 🔥To Reheat. This sauce is best served cold or at room temperature. Reheating is not needed. If it thickens in the fridge, let it sit out for a few minutes and stir.
What To Serve With Homemade Honey Mustard Sauce
The best combo is with crispy chicken or any chicken dinner really! This sauce works with almost everything, but these are some of our favorite ways to use it:
- Chicken fingers or tenders - Perfect for dipping.
- Crispy chicken burgers, wraps, or tortillas - Adds moisture and flavor without overpowering the chicken.
- Ham and cheese sandwiches or toasties - A tangy upgrade to classic deli-style sandwiches.
- Chicken or turkey marinades - Helps keep lean meats juicy while adding sweet and savory flavor.
- Poached eggs - A drizzle adds richness and a gentle tang.
- Beef hash croquettes - Great as a dipping sauce for crispy, savory bites.
- Hashbrowns or French fries - A fun alternative to ketchup or mayo.
- Poutine-style fries - Adds a creamy, slightly sweet contrast to salty fries.
- Drizzled over baked salmon - Brightens up mild fish without hiding its flavor.
